Will AI Change the Job You Want? Better Questions to Ask
Look at the tasks inside a job, not the headline. Four questions to ask about any career.
Talk about AI and jobs tends to swing between "it will take everything" and "nothing will change". Neither helps you choose a path. A more useful approach is to look at the tasks inside a job, not just the job title.
Jobs are bundles of tasks
Most jobs mix routine tasks, such as filling in forms or writing standard replies, with tasks that need judgment, hands-on skill or trust between people. AI tools are generally better at the first kind, so they tend to change how a job is done before they change whether it exists.
Questions worth asking about any career
- Which parts happen in the physical world? Installing, repairing, building and caring for people are hard to do from a screen.
- Which parts depend on trust? People often want someone they can hold responsible for advice, care or a big purchase.
- Which routine tasks could a tool speed up? That is where knowing how to use AI well may become part of the job.
- How do people in the job use AI now? Ask someone who does the work. Their answer will be more specific than any headline.
Skills that travel
Clear writing, working with numbers, solving problems and checking a tool's output are useful in almost any field. So is using AI responsibly, because more workplaces are starting to use these tools.
